"ABAD" beneficiary: Tamara Nazarova | Region: Masally | Straw weaving
Tamara Nazarova, a resident of Türkoba village in the Masalli district, is engaged in the traditional art of mat weaving, characteristic of the southern region of Azerbaijan. The artisan collects a specific type of reed known as "ligh" from surrounding villages. After a 30-day drying process, the collected reeds are used to craft baskets and various household items.
Mat weaving serves as the primary source of income for Tamara’s family. She produces a diverse range of mat-based products, including baskets, trays, pots, and kitchen utensils, tailored to different tastes and available in various sizes and designs.
Teaching this craft to her children, Tamara has sought to expand her family business by applying to the Masalli regional ABAD center. Despite producing a wide variety of products, she relies heavily on ABAD’s marketing services to identify which types of mat products are most preferred by customers.
With the necessary support from ABAD in design and marketing, Tamara now produces high-demand products that appeal to customers’ tastes. Thanks to ABAD’s assistance, her delicate handmade works are sold not only in the Masalli district but also in ABAD craftsmanship centers in the capital city of Baku.
