"ABAD" beneficiary: Tavus Taghiyeva | Region: Ismayilly | Carpet weaving
One of the families preserving the art of Azerbaijani carpet weaving, a masterpiece of the nation’s folk craftsmanship, is the Taghiyev family from the Lahij settlement in the Ismayilli district. Tavus Taghiyeva, a member of the family, has been engaged in the art of carpet weaving since the age of 7 or 8. After completing secondary school, Tavus began working at a carpet weaving workshop in the Lahij settlement.
Having dedicated over 50 years to this craft, Tavus Taghiyeva recalls:
“At that time, every girl was expected to learn the art of carpet weaving. Our neighbor, Halima, had a carpet loom, and I would often watch her weave. Observing my aptitude for the craft, Halima began teaching me the intricacies of this art in depth.”
Currently, Tavus Taghiyeva creates small carpet samples based on elements derived from ancient Azerbaijani carpets, which she sells as souvenirs.
With the aim of establishing a family business in the field of carpet weaving and securing greater support for this endeavor, she has joined the ABAD family. Today, the handmade works and souvenir carpets of the Taghiyev family, supported by ABAD, are available for purchase at ABAD craftsmanship centers.
