"ABAD" beneficiary: Yegana Sovzaliyeva | Region: Masally | Knitting
Yegana Sovzaliyeva,
a resident of Hasanli village in the Masalli district, is a skilled textile
artisan who has been engaged in traditional knitting since the age of 15.
Supported by ABAD, Ms. Sovzaliyeva has dedicated more than three decades to
preserving and evolving the art of handwoven textiles in rural Azerbaijan.
Initially focused on
producing everyday knitted items for practical use, she gradually expanded her
creative output by making decorative pieces and turned her craft into a source
of income.
With 31 years of
hands-on experience, Ms. Sovzaliyeva describes her work as follows:
“Knitting is a
highly labor-intensive craft. It requires patience, precision, and delicacy —
and in return, it gives you something elegant and refined.”
Working from her
home, she produces a variety of handmade items including hats, scarves, socks,
and children’s clothing, which she markets locally within her community.
Although the volume
of sales remains modest, Ms. Sovzaliyeva emphasizes the personal fulfillment
and joy she derives from her craft.
In order to improve
her business practices and generate a more sustainable income, she applied to
the ABAD initiative. With the organization’s support, she has been able to
increase the visibility and sales of her products. Today, Ms. Sovzaliyeva is
planning to scale her family business and expand her market reach beyond her
immediate surroundings.
