"ABAD" beneficiary: Nagi Naghiyev | Region: Ganja | Pottery and ceramics
Nagi Naghiyev, a
resident of Ganja supported by the “ABAD” initiative, is a master ceramicist
whose handcrafted works, including plates, pitchers, and various tableware in
traditional Azerbaijani styles, are distinguished by their originality and
aesthetic appeal. Naghiyev draws inspiration from the epic “Khamsa” by the
renowned poet Nizami Ganjavi, incorporating motifs from poems such as The
Treasury of Mysteries, Leyli and Majnun, and Seven Beauties into the intricate designs
of his ceramics.
According to the
artisan, he learned the art of miniature painting in his uncle’s workshop and
has consistently strived for professional excellence in this field:
“I began my
professional career as an artist in 1971 and have participated in numerous
international exhibitions, earning medals for my work.”
Despite his ability
to create exquisite miniatures on ceramics, Naghiyev has faced challenges in
sourcing raw materials and accessing broader markets, which have hindered the
further development of his craft. To overcome these obstacles and expand his
market reach, he decided to seek support from “ABAD.”
His application was
met with a positive response, and as part of “ABAD”’s program to support
families and individuals engaged in decorative and applied folk arts, Naghiyev’s
handcrafted ceramics are now available for sale at “ABAD” craft centers.
Naghiyev notes that
the enthusiastic reception of his work by tourists, coupled with increased
sales and improved financial stability, has inspired him to train new
specialists in this field, further contributing to the preservation and
promotion of this traditional craft.
