"ABAD" beneficiary: Sabir Bayramov | Region: Lankaran | Wood carving
Sabir Bayramov, a resident
of Laj village in the Lankaran region of Azerbaijan, has been dedicated to the
art of woodcarving—one of the prominent branches of Azerbaijan’s
decorative-applied folk art for over two decades. Having lived abroad for many
years, mainly in Kazakhstan, Sabir traces his passion for this craft back to
his childhood, when he showed a natural inclination toward shaping wooden
figures.
Throughout his career,
Sabir has specialized in creating intricate depictions of nature, especially
animal and bird figures. He prefers to use naturally dried wood collected from
local forests as his primary material. For him, the craft is not only a
creative outlet but also a continuous learning experience. As he explains,
“When I carve a figure from wood, I enjoy the process and always feel like I’m
learning something new.”
Sabir’s works have been
showcased in exhibitions and have earned him several awards and diplomas. While
most of his current orders come from Kazakhstan, where interest in handcrafted
wooden items is particularly high, he expresses a strong desire to revive local
appreciation for woodcarving in Azerbaijan. He believes that with the support
of ABAD, this traditional art form can be elevated to a new level.
Today, his unique handmade
pieces are on display and available for purchase at the ABAD Handicrafts Center
located in Icherisheher, Baku’s historic old city.
